Shopping Delight At SM Hypermarket

The day was sweltering hot and it was already late in the afternoon. I wanted to cool off and do that thing that every woman loves... Shopping! So I made my grocery list and went to SM Hypermarket in Bicutan, which is my fave Philippines Supermarket as it is enormous and complete! Got to save the planet, you know, even in my own little way!
As soon as I entered the mall, I felt my body cool down and even my slight stress was relieved. Oh, how shopping can do this, even if you are on a budget! I started walking slower and took my time looking around before going up to the 2nd floor SM Hypermarket. By the time I got up to SM Hypermarket, I realized it was already nearly 7pm! No wonder my stomach was grumbling! Well, I decided to have a quick snack at the one of the food stalls in front on the check out counter for as every good shopper knows, you can't enter a grocery if you are hungry, as you might go over your budget. After chomping down and having a cool , tall drink, I went in.
As I got my shopping cart, my cellphone started ringing. It was my mom on the line. She was worried as my father, who recently had a stroke, was not eating properly. Dad had told her that kind of food that was for stroke victims was tasteless and boring. I told her, "Maybe he just wants me to bring him something special! I am in SM Hypermarket now and will drop by with something for Dad to eat in a while..."
So I rushed through my grocery list, piling things into the cart as fast as I can. Then I went to the ready-to-cook section so I can buy some breaded chicken breast fillets for myself. As I looked closer, I noticed the chicken wrapped in pandan leaves that I have never tried before. I remember my cousin telling me about them, how she would place it on top of the rice cooker to steam it as she was cooking rice. I decided to buy a 100 peso pack that had 10 chicken pandan pieces for my father. I also grabbed a ready-to-eat salad with vinaigrette dressing and a couple of packs of pre-sliced fruit. I was ready to go. I went to the check-out counter and paid. Then, I realized that if Dad was hungry, he would still have to wait for the pandan chicken to be cooked!
I quickly decided to buy a roasted teriyaki chicken so he can eat as soon as I got there.With the chicken in the bag, hot and ready, I pushed the cart until my car, loaded up and went to my parents house. As I entered, both of them lying on the bed, frowning and looking awfully grumpy. I opened up the aluminum foil and showed them the golden roasted chicken. I was rewarded with a wide, nearly toothless smile from Dad.
Dad said to Mom, "Where is my teeth?", and I chuckled as Mom jumped out of bed to get it. I got the bed tray and set it up with his favorite pineapple juice and the chicken. Much to out delight, he finished half of the chicken, while Mom wiped out the salad. I placed the rest of the groceries on their bedside and left with a happy heart.
The next day, my Mom called me again. She was so relieved as she had steamed the chicken pandan and Dad ate 5 pieces! Imagine that! Dad said that the food I brought him tasted good. What is even better is that it is good for his health! He even finished the fruits already. I had to go back again to SM Hypermarket bring him more food.
Today, my father is fully recovered. His favorite food is chicken pandan and we have invented a variety of ways to serve it. We place it in his potato or macaroni salad or make it into a chicken sandwich as it is already very flavorful and requires less mayonnaise. We serve it steamed and even make it into apritada or nilaga. Every Sunday, I bring a couple of roasted chickens to add to the family pot luck in my parents home. Dad shares one chicken with my 5-year old nephew who can't eat enough of it!
